The Aspérges
(Sprinkling of Holy Water)

Hyssop (represented
by the aspergillum) is a tufted plant used by the Jews for aspersions.
|
There is no normative sprinkling rite in the Mass of
Paul VI. However, the Asperges
would theoretically be permitted prior to Mass. This is done rarely on EWTN’s hybrid Latin/English
Pauline (1970) or “Novus Ordo” Mass, for example, on a high feast day.
In the Tridentine Rite, there is an Asperges or Vidi
Aquam before all High Masses celebrated on Sundays throughout the year.
If received devoutly, the Asperges/Vidi Aquam remits all
venial sins of those sprinkled.
During the Asperges/Vidi Aquam, Psalm 50 (the
“Miserere”) or the Confitemini is chanted by the schola/choir.

[Immediately before the principal Sunday High Mass,
the celebrant, wearing a cope and accompanied by ministers (usually a
deacon and subdeacon), intones at the altar the Asperges me or Vidi
aquam, according to the time of year; he then sprinkles the altar, the
clergy and people, saying in a low voice the psalm Miserere or
Confitemini.]

THE INTROIT
|
[Standing at the Epistle side of
the altar, he reads the Introit of the Mass being celebrated. At High Mass, of course, it is
chanted by the choir and read (albeit inaudibly) by the priest at the
altar, facing God in the Tabernacle.]
